Isla Palenque (ees’-lah pah-len’-kay)

In the heart of the Gulf of Chiriquí, you’ll find Isla Palenque, a long forgotten island sanctuary on which you'll have endless days of adventure and relaxation in nearly perfect Panama weather. In ancient times the island was renowned by indigenous tribes as a place of sacred significance; they called it "Palenque", meaning sanctuary.

Isla Palenque is some 400 acres, with five miles of coast and over a mile and a half of soft volcanic beaches, ranging from a large, zebra-striped and sunset-facing crescent beach which forms most of the island’s southwest side to numerous secluded private and hidden beaches, known only to those who explore the island extensively. There are stunning views of the ocean in every direction, whether from one of our pristine beaches, serene coconut groves, wild rocky outcroppings or craggy ridges covered with ancient trees.

Isla Palenque's beauty doesn't stop at the coast; the island offers an incredibly lush and varied interior. Hike dramatic bluffs, take in the view from gently rolling hills, canoe through exotic lagoons, pass by precious mangroves, float along our tree-top canopy walk, walk through our 240 acres of preserved tropical forest, sight endless species of wildlife along our eleven miles of trails, or sip pure water from an ancient artesian spring. Isla Palenque is an idyllic habitat for an enormous variety of native plants, animals... and discriminating travelers. Our Pledge to Keep the Island Wild

Isla Palenque was a wild and pristine paradise when we discovered it, and our goal is for it to remain that way. Over 60% of the island will be set aside as a nature preserve and only about 5% of the island will be built upon. We have painstakingly designed our buildings and roads to conform to the land, working around old growth trees and boulders, minimizing disturbance of terrain and waterways, and ensuring that the resort and homes feel like a genuine extension of the island’s astounding natural amenities.
